I'm a mage, so I normally rely on magic for everything.
Wish I could say I have no idea what an adventurer's life is like, but my research tends to lead me into plenty of dangerous places. It's kind of annoying, even if it usually pays off in the end.
Then you and I seem to be quite alike in the end, aren't we? Well-- Suppose I don't do it for the knowledge. Gold tends to be the primary motivator. Pays quite a bit better than fortune-telling.
Look, I know everyone who gets asked this question gets offended by it, but ... aren't you a little young to be off adventuring?
Well, yeah. In Aspio, you have to go through a certification process to get recognized as a mage and given full access to the Empire's resources for magic research. Part of it involves writing a thesis, which gets reviewed by your peers. There are periodic re-evaluations, too, so you can't just get a license and sit on it without ever publishing your research.
[.........Wow! He listens to all of that, nodding, nodding. Sure, sure. The Empire does tightly control magic, that is a thing that seems familiar! But.]
. . . Me, personally, I nicked myself shaving and turned the razor to ice.
Yep. It took years of study to get where I am now.
I’ve heard of people with innate magic abilities, but it’s incredibly rare where I’m from. If it surprised you, then I take it it’s not the norm for, [a vague gesture at him.] whatever you are?
A whatever-I-am! I prefer that to just leaping straight to demon at least.
[He just seems amused.]
It's rare as far as I understand too. Most of the time it's study, or a deal with a strange cursed sword, or ... I won't get into the dragon thing again.
[he's right, it's not satisfying to go without an explanation. also, she maybe just flipped to a different page and jotted down some quick notes? while looking at him? it's fine.]
So what's a tiefling? I already gathered you don't like getting lumped in with monsters. Unfortunately, where I'm from, that's what people call anything that isn't clearly human, Krityan, or a domesticated animal.
[He is so used to the note-taking thing, it doesn't even phase him. He hangs out with pure nerds all the time.]
Well, it's what I am? [He is so terrible explaining things, sorry Rita.] Just a type of person. Horns, tail. Not too many of us around, but, you know. You see us on the road occasionally.

[He sticks his tongue out. It's forked.]
Yourself?

Hmph. I’ve been a fully certified mage for a few years now. And I’m used to taking care of myself, besides.

Suppose if you're-- They certify for that kind of thing?

What, like, by accident?

[He holds his hands up and waggles his fingers.]
Surprise magic blood.

[He clicks his tongue, tilting his head.]
But you had to learn yours, yes? And then, I suppose in a way, work for the government?

So... what, the blood itself has magical properties?

It's-- It's a tiefling, by the way. Is what I am.

[In contrast to her neverending thirst for magic deets, an explanation of "sometimes people are just purple" is satisfying enough on this matter.]
Seeing as we're all from different worlds, I guess I should be more surprised that there are so many humans.
