But I think he will like offers that are kind. And he likes things that are funny so long as they aren't mean-spirited.
It may be worth simply offering as payment what we intend to do with the prize. We intend to stay awake so we can learn as much as we can, not just for the purpose of capturing someone. And we have good investigative skills, but will be able to avoid danger. And we will share what we've learned with everyone. This may not tip it, but I think he would be inclined to choose a bid that would be used in a way that helps everyone.
I agree with the idea we should explain what we're using it for. I doubt he wants it to be for bloodshed.
What about something along the lines of that, but in a more general sense. Doing something for the group at large. Organize a get-together or something. Isn't like it's hard to get a few drinks up. If he's so focused on friendships, maybe we agree to reach out to someone we haven't much before now. Make a new ally.

There's benefits to a sword that doesn't cut, too. If someone is killed with a sword, can't be yours. But take the vouchers you need.
