When this trial began, perhaps none of you imagined that this case in present day would be intrinsically connected to that day from years ago. In the end, though, if there's anything like fate in the world, this is what it would look like—the fact that you are all here today.

During the previous recess, you asked the defence one question: What do you see, standing in the courtroom? She didn't understand what you meant, and you could not reveal your true question: What does justice mean to you? All you could say in response to her confusion was to think it over.

(Does every crime need to be punished? Your answer—not just as a lawyer, when you never wanted to be one, but as a person—is no. Sometimes, the case is tragic enough, and the outcome of a sentence is too cruel.)
