I think 'you're already failing again' was addressed to what is controlling him, not himself. But I could have it wrong.

We had to kill the thing erasing the memories of the people we encountered before in order for them to be free of it
That being said
I think pressing is a good idea if only to see how far it goes
But definitely carefully
I don't want to hurt them
