I figured she wouldn't have shit to say to me, either, but we talked for a little bit.
[He can turn the screws when he needs to, but he didn't have to.]
It was a surprising conversation in many ways. She wouldn't tell me anything but lies when it came to her reasoning. But. . . I think I learned some things all the same.
She claimed she'd done it so there would be 'more wish for her,' but in a way where I didn't believe her. I didn't believe a word out of her mouth until. . . she said we shouldn't blame the Dorm Heads for what happened, or the Principal. She said they hadn't encouraged her to do this, and had been kind to her. She also said we needed try to 'play along' with things like the school or the Dorm Wars or graduation, not blindly, but less confrontationally. It didn't sound as though she was warning us to be wary of them so much as felt this was a safer and more productive course of action; that they were people we needed to get along with. She kept saying this place was weird, odd things were going on, we needed to have a more open mind and stop demanding to go home.
[Hmm.] How to put this. . . her whole demeanor changed. I felt sorry for her, a little bit. Something happened she didn't feel she could talk about, but I don't believe it was anywhere as cruelly intentioned as a cold blooded murder.
[He just listens to all of this, arms crossed, tail starting to sway back and forth - clearly getting more and more agitated even as his face doesn't do the same. Though he looks a little angrier.]
I'm plenty fucking open-minded, but there's-- [He screws up his face and then it relaxes some, at least. Just an initial buck against the reins and he settles. Waving a hand.] Go along to get along, then.
[she listens - picking at her hands absently. she's doing the thundercloud thing again.]
Yeah, easy, stop demanding to go home! You got kidnapped, deal with it! [pissy noise.] Whatever. It probably wasn't, but she still did it, and she still invoked whatever ancient murder tradition the school has.
Do any of us think this not going to happen again? Because I feel like that can't just be the end of it.
[You guys are such obstinate bitches. He loves that, he does, but it's hard to shake the frustration of failing to convey that she - well.]
I don't know. She tried to play it off like she was selfish and evil, but there was something she wasn't saying, and she sounded like she was trying to be as helpful as she could. When I asked her what we could do for her, all she cared about was that - some person here had been badmouthing her friends at home, and she wanted to carry the blame on her own.
[It was extremely sad, y'all.]
But no, I don't think that's the end of it. There's something ugly here.
... No, not really. [she does look back down at her hands. her voice is a little less rough, a little less angry, at least.] Viola doesn't know why she did it. Or at least, she's saying she doesn't know.
Well, two things about that. First of all, they can listen in on conversations if someone from their dorm is having them. So, hello, Viola, Luke, and Chad. Viola assured me she would not, but - we might as well be aware.
But it isn't because of that that I say I don't see any harm in trying to trust them for now. Face to face would make that easier, but it doesn't hurt to try.
[His eyebrows shoot right up at that? Looking around like he can maybe see some shit? He didn't last long enough with the team to really get into the Scrying shenanigans, but you swear to god, the eye on his neck maybe looks around too. Or it's just a trick of the light.]
They can? What the-- Oh, yes, we don't have any magic or know what magic is, we can simply magically hear everything you say? The fuck!
Yeah, Viola said the same thing to me. I've been assuming they've been listening whenever I talk to anybody.
[stop don't talk about the eyes]
I'm not going to actively - whatever, but trust is a strong word for what I'm offering them after all this. [...] It's easy to fake being genuine when you're just words on a screen.
[He'd been about to say more on the whole, spying situation, but that second bit makes him pause. His grin comes back, crooked, arms crossing loosely like he doesn't quite know what to do with it.]
Mm. I did think you'd two would be smart enough not to get taken to the laundress by a fortune teller, but, you know ...
[He'd said as much though. He didn't care if it was the truth. He just needed to be able to believe it. So, yeah, he accepts this apology that isn't for lying, but just getting caught in a lie. That feels right.]
But I already finished that extra credit, so, it isn't necessary or anything.
. . . That is a bit creepy. Mine have just been silly and easy to do.
[Francy. We see you.]
Anyway. We can fill you in on anything you want to know, if you want to know about it. It's your decision. [. . .] Ah, but maybe we should also talk about vouchers before we wade into the muck?
[the last time she apologized he looked at her like she'd grown another head so
anyway, she glances at caleb, almost nervously, before digging around in her pockets.] I had seven. I have four now because I spent three on a phone. That was discounted because I talked to Viola, I guess? She just said discount but I didn't ask about it.
That's expensive, for a little messaging device. [No it's not, Caleb. But he thinks it is.] Good thing to have it back, though.
I have six, also. Mollymauk and I were talking about pooling them together. My thinking then was if it came to a fight, Mollymauk with a sword is a little more useful than me with only a cantrip. But I'm second guessing this plan, since the fight we'd get into is more likely to be one on one.
[Him with a cantrip is better than him with nothing.]
Still, we may as well use our numbers and talk about what we can buy that helps us most.
You get a discount if you buy through your Dorm Head. Chad said a sword would cost nine from another. I think they also upcharge if they don't like you.
[So Viola probably likes Beau?]
Should probably get you a cantrip in that case. [He taps his chin.] I was thinking I get my ... ice blood back. Then I don't need a sword at all. Or at least, not a real one.
[incredible that viola maybe likes her considering beau has yelled at her SEVERAL times. she tilts her head back, thinking.]
Pooling together is fine. I'll have more this upcoming week, too. I have a feeling I know what stuff I did to get as many as I have, so it should be easy. [...] Cantrip is a good idea. I think both me and Molly can do pretty good on our own just grabbing whatever off the floor. Me more than you.
[gestures at molly.] So we can focus in that order. You need your magic though. What were you thinking?
I'd like something better than a cantrip - Polymorph or Web of Fire would be my pick - but considering I'll need components too, the cost may be too high. Firebolt or Control Flames and a few matches could at least keep me safe, and I may be able to afford it this week.

I doubt it was cold-blooded murder myself.

[What an insight check. Well all that does just make him feel sad for her! So I guess success.]
Not much we can do for her now though, is there?

[But no, he agrees. Words on a screen aren't enough. Anyway, yeah, he hates this too. Not a big fan of being spied on!]
. . . Speaking of trust. We ought to apologize to Mr. Mollymauk, for being more incompetent at lying than you would hope for in your friends.

Asshole. [a longer pause.] You had an extra credit based on lying? What the fuck. All of mine have been about girls so far, why is the bear a creep.
